Cleveland Chapter

Spring 2011

The Cleveland Chapter had four meetings in this period.

The January meeting had two parts:

1. Central Process System and Distributed Control Video.
2. A Tunnel through Time Video.

Part 1 when aeronautical researchers develop advanced materials for aircrafts or study the flight characteristics of and airplane part, they depend o state-of-the-art services, equipment, and highly-trained personnel of the Central Process System (CPS) at NGRC. CPS helps America reach its aero propulsion research goals by providing services to simulate real-world environmental operating conditions inside NGRC's many test cells and research wind tunnels. Debashis Sadaukian answered questions after the video.

Part 2 The Altitude Wind Tunnel (AWT) was the nation's only facility capable of studying full-scale aircraft engines under realistic flight conditions. It traced the AWT's story from conception in per-War Germany through its construction, life as a wind tunnel, repurposing for Mercury, and rebirth s the SPC for vacuum testing of Centaur electronics and shroud jettison systems, to it's closure in the mid-1970's, and ultimate destruction in 2009. Scott Maribiito answered questions after the video.

It was a great meeting. The food was good. Thanks Jimmy for arranging this excellent training meeting.

The March meeting was on Biological Research in Low Gravity. Dr. Jerry Myers, Chief REB, made the presentation. He covered many interesting subjects in the program. Here are a few examples: He explained what the Branch is doing with Bio Fluids and Homodynamic. Showed how Computational Physiology can be used for health analysis. Risk Analysis is an important area for the Branch to explain to the Astronauts what their risk will be on a given mission. This was very good meeting for the group, health problem on missions are very important, good fellowship, and great food made it a fun event.

The April meeting was on Communications Research at GRC. Dr. Felix A. Miranda, Chief of A& O Systems Branch talked about the communication research work done at NASA GRC and other places. He explained there work on competence, antenna systems, proper use of the microwave spectrum, RF & optical systems, gyro electronics, and nanotechnology systems. The new optical transmitters/receivers for use in space will make long distance communications clear, rapid, and easy to use. A lot of work is being done by some very competent people to make planet earth a great home with good communications for future generations. The food was great.

The Election of Officers was in June this year. It was a special event to focus on our membership drive. We made a concerted effort to bring new members to the Club. This Club has done a lot of good things for GRC. Top Management strongly supports this activity. It makes working together on Teams much more pleasant. Ernie Bartone and Jimmy Simek took care of the logistics. The steaks and fish were excellent again this year. There are a few changes in the Officers and Committee Chairs for next year. Please try to attend as many meetings as you can this will keep our costs down. It was a great roast with a lot of news; fun, and good cooking for a delicious meal. See you at the the Bob Jones Classic golf outing.

CHAPTER ACTIVITIES

We are supporting meetings and conferences on the Management Committees, with papers, tutorials, and session Chairs and suggested topics. The Chapter Staff are all working to build our membership. Our golf outing, social events, and technical meetings are working to keep the members active. Each member is trying to bring an associate to activities when they can.

Conferences are being planned for the Ohio Aerospace Institute. Training classes are offered at the OAI for all to enjoy. Go on to OAI.org for more information.

Overall, here in Cleveland we are having fun, staying active, and trying to serve the needs of our members.

Regards,

Vince Lalli
